Beau Hicks

Texas high school football lost a legend yesterday and TASO
Football last a dear friend. The “Dean” of Texas football officials,
Beau Hicks left us to join the love of his life, Nelda, in eternity Sunday
morning. Beau has bend officiating football since 1957 and even worked a high
school game last year. Beau worked his way up to the Southwest Conference and
Big XII, including more that a dozen bowl games. He continued to stay involved
by observing for the Big XII and as a scout for the NFL.

Where Beau truly has left his mark was on the countless number of football
officials he assisted in getting better and moving up the ranks. It didn’t
matter if you wanted to sharpen your skills to move form sub varsity to varsity
from high school to college or from college to the NFL, Beau always had time to
help and a smile on his face. Beau was a well sought after clinician serving as
an instructor at every TASO clinic and many football officiating camps all
across the country …. and Nelda was his constant companion.

Beau left his mark off the field as well, serving in every office of the
Southeast Texas/Beaumont Chapter and was a TASO Football Division Board member
serving as District IV Director at the time of his death. I am proud and
honored to have been his colleague and friend.

On Monday, August 18th, I was honored to join Bud Alexander, Bill Fecci and
Tommy Moore to pay tribute to Beau in Beaumont. Click HERE
for a link to a local news story.

I shared a few press boxes and sidelines with Beau but I never had the honor to
work on the same field. I think that some day, Beau is going to let me crew‑up
with him and no doubt will provide a few pointers. If I am smart, I will listen
and learn.  Beau, give Nelda a hug from
all of us, we miss you both.

There is a Facebook public group page called “Tribute to
Beau Hicks” if you would like to join and share your personal thoughts about
Beau.
